Jamb on immoral book

Image
‘immoral book’ Folashade Adebayo The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board has said that it lacks the power to withdraw In Dependence, the book currently being used for the Use of English Test in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. The board, however, said it had invited assessors at the Nigerian Academy of Letters, the highest authority on arts in the country, to propose amendments to portions of the book deemed graphic and immoral by stakeholders in the education sector. It would be recalled that the Parent-Teacher-Association of The Crescent School, Lagos, had recently petitioned the JAMB, the National Examination Council and the Federal Ministry of Education, over some recommended texts for candidates sitting for the UTME, the Basic Education Certificate Examination and pupils in the Junior Secondary School 1. ASUU REJECTS 120 CUT-OFF MARK FOR ADMISSION INTO UNIVERSITY

Image
VCs, ASUU reject 120 cut-off mark for varsity admission Prof. Is-haq Oloyede •‘It’s FG’s ploy to destroy public varsities’ Olufemi Atoyebi and Folashade Adebayo SOME Vice-Chancellors and the Academic Staff Union of Universities have rejected the decision of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to peg admission cut-off mark at 120 for universities and 100 for polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education. ASUU said the action, which it described as a “sad policy decision,” was in tandem “with the dream of the present government to destroy public universities in the country.” Most of the vice-chancellors our correspondents interviewed on the issue maintained that they would not lower admission standards in their respective varsities. The vice-chancellors stated that the decision would add no value to the nation’s university system. For instance, in a statement issued by the Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, on the issue and relea

Buhari resign?

Image
Should Buhari resign? Olayinka Folarin (Chairman, Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, Ogun State chapter) The call for President Muhammadu Buhari’s resignation is not out of place. It should be seen as a passionate demand by truthful sympathisers, and not some cabals, who are in the business of playing politics at the expense of the President’s health. In other climes, leaders are expected to be honourable people, who respect the oath of office they swore to defend.  I have huge sympathy for Buhari because I remain convinced that he meant well for Nigeria when he contested the presidential election in 2015. But, nature is depriving Mr. President and other Nigerians of getting the best of services that he promised the nation. However, it is over 90 days that he has been off the beat this year. Recall that in 2016, he was also out of duty for 52 days. Although, people may argue that his being out of office is constitutionally protected in terms of procedure, but its lo

Asuu strikes demand decisiveness

Image
Recurring ASUU strikes demand decisiveness ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi It is a very difficult moment for university education in Nigeria as it is beset by chronic strikes. The Academic Staff Union of Universities declared the most recent one on August 12, disrupting the already fragile system. ASUU’s main grievance is that the Federal Government has not implemented the agreement it reached with the union in 2009. Except in a few institutions, ASUU members have completely halted teaching, research and meetings to press home their demands. In a global economy driven by knowledge, this is costly for the students and the country. The current crisis dates back to the early days of the Fourth Republic. In 2007, ASUU embarked on a major strike in the twilight of Olusegun Obasanjo’s presidency. It took appeals from his successor, the late Umaru Yar’Adua, who argued that he was new on the job, for the lecturers to sheathe their swords. The government temporarily saved the syste

The Super Eagles boss invited 23 players with seven on stand by for the World Cup qualifier against the Indomitable Lions on September 1 and 4 respectively. And the German tactician is boasting that his latest squad will be stronger than the one that fell 2-0 to South Africa as has sets his sights on claiming victory in Uyo.

ASUU justifies strike, accuses Ngige of blackmail

Image
ASUU justifies strike, accuses Ngige of blackmail Olufemi Atoyebi, Ibadan The Academic Staff Union of Universities has called on the Minister for Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, to desist from cheap blackmail in the handling of the ongoing strike called by the union. The President of the union, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, in a bulletin on the strike, asked members of the union to disregard the comment by the minister that the strike was illegal. He said, “Our national struggle to revitalise the Nigerian university system is comprehensive and total. Remain resolute and steadfast as victory is certain.” Also, the ASUU Chairman at the University of Ibadan, Dr Deji Omole, who condemned the tactics employed by the Federal Government over the demands of the union, said it was deceitful for the minister to insinuate that the N23bn earned allowances, which the Federal Government promised to pay soon, were only for lecturers. He said the earned allowances were for both

NFF okays Rohrs invitation list for Fifa world cup qualifiers

NFF okays Rohr’s invitation list ON AUGUST 24, 20174:16 AMIN SPORTSCOMMENTS Nigeria Football Federation technical committee chairman, Chris Green said Coach Gernot Rohr’s list of invitation for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon was adequate. Rohr unveiled his list of players for the back to back clash against the Indomitable Lions next month yesterday and Green stated that the NFF is confident that Rohr and his team will get the maximum points. “Well, I want to say the list is fair. It is actually at the discretion of the coach,” Green told Goal. “He has done his scouting and he has his strategy and his tactics too. And what he is doing now is just getting skeletons and putting them into the flesh. “He has gotten those players he thinks will help him execute whatever plans he has. Of course, he had players on standby and they are picked should anything unforeseen happen to those who have been so chosen. “Let us see the list as our own and as a list that God will bless us a
